Mosaics are a renowned craft in parts of the Middle East. The city of Madaba, Jordan, is home to Mount Nebo, known as the location where God showed Moses the Promised Land before his death. (Recorded in Deuteronomy 34) If anyone has ever been there, you also know it is well-known for its mosaics.
What Exactly Are Mosaics?
Mosaics are designs and pictures made by placing small pieces of glass, stone, and tile into patterns. Mosaics are some of the most beautiful pieces of artwork. I think a well-done mosaic is as beautiful as any painting, and often requires a lot more work and creativity.
Below is the story of how our family, over several years, made many mosaics in the Middle East. We will share many of the pictures with you and share how we did it. Where did we get the materials? Broken pieces of floor tiles and glass were scattered all over the city we used to live in. In the Middle East, the local people are known for leaving trash and garbage everywhere in areas where they live. To many Arabs, littering is a normal way of life in the Middle East. Well, we don’t like garbage left sitting around everywhere, but sometimes you can find ways to turn trash into treasure.
